Potting mix is next. I tend to use
Organic, but I will use non organic also, during the winter season. Like we stated, we are giving you a choice. When using potting mix, organic or not, the problem is the same. Its, over watered, or under watered. This is why the retailers sell water holding types of amendments and potting mixes.
Under watering, will cause the potting mix to dry out. When the potting mix becomes dry, it actually become hydrophobic. It will not absorb water. Any watering will just flow right through the potting mix, not giving your plant time to take it up. This will cause the organic bio-life and fertilizers to both be ineffective at maintaining a healthy vegetable plant. Moisture is needed for the bio-life activity in organic potting mix. Water is also needed as a solvent to break down the fertilizer to be available as food. With out moisture, all of this stops.
Over watering, which we observed, is what most container gardeners do eventually. Over watering or flooding your container will flush the organic bio-life, and fertilizer out the bottom, of the potting mix. This wastes your time and money. To have both the organic bio-life and fertilizer available takes time to build and break down to become available to your vegetable plant. Also over watering/flooding your container potting mix will cause non beneficial algae and bacteria to grow, making your plant sickly looking, unhealthy, and encouraging powdery mildew. A growing vegetable needs more water than what most marketed watering products will provide. A growing vegetable plant needs more available nutrients in the potting mix than a house plant. As your vegetable plant grows it will require both more water and nutrients for its continued growth and food production. This is why the Plant Hydrator is so unique. It can grow with your plant's needs, from seed to fruiting.
